Visa vs Passport
A passport allows you to travel to another country. A visa allows you to stay longer than if you were traveling solely for tourism.
A visa is a stamp placed inside of your passport. Visa processes are up to the discretion of the country where you are studying and can vary in requirements, length of processing time, and cost.
In order to apply for a visa, you will need to submit your physical passport for the duration of the process. You cannot submit a copy of your passport in lieu of the physical document. This means there will be a period of time that you will not have your passport.
Depending on the location of your program the visa process could take anywhere from a few days to a few months, so it is important to know the details of your specific process before planning any international travel that will occur prior to your program start date.

Things to Consider Before Applying
Applying for a visa is a highly individualized process. If one of your friends is going to the same country as you, or even on the same program, the way you apply could be different. Make sure you are reviewing the visa process that will work best for YOU and meeting with an advisor regarding any questions you have about obtaining a visa.
